Elderly Abuse
Last class’s discussion about elderly people being abused hit home greatly. About two years ago my great aunt the woman who helped raise me had a minor stroke. I flew up to New York to be with her and to see her, she was doing well still shaken up but just needed some physical therapy then she could continue on with life as normal. My aunt who was her care giver put her in a nursing home to go through physical therapy and a nice expensive one to be safe. In there care she “fell” on her way to the bathroom and another time on the way back when she was suppose to be on bed rest and someone was supposed to watch her. In her fall she bruised and injured herself severely and ultimately had a more sever stroke due to the fall. She was taken to a hospital and treated but was incoherent she could not talk she was on life support for about 3 weeks before she finally passed. We have been trying to investigate and hold the nursing home responsible and has been a hard task. I feel as though nothing will bring her back and that is WAS there fault 100% if they were doing there jobs my grandmother would still be alive today. She was no old and inactive person and to see her in that state broke my heart. During the video in class it brought back a lot of emotion and the scary realization that elderly people are being abused everywhere with no voice.
